Judge Samuel Diaz, Jr. - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Samuel Diaz, Jr. is a judge for the Riverside County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2009.

He is a registered Republican.

Judge Diaz received his B.A. from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1986. He also concurrently served in the U.S Army Reserves as a combat engineer. He went on to earn his J.D. from Western State College of Law in 1991.

After law school, Diaz first worked as an attorney at the law firm of Stockdale, Peckham, and Werner. During his short time there, Diaz practiced insurance defense and also handled civil discovery and construction defect matters.

After two years with the firm, Diaz left in 1994 to join the Riverside County Public Defender's Office, where he would serve as a deputy public defender for four years.

He re-entered private practice in 1998, this time as a sole practitioner, where he would serve as an attorney for the Conflict Defense Panel, the Conflict Defense Lawyers, and in federal cases with the Federal Indigent Panel for the Central District of California.

He remained in that capacity until 2007, when he returned to the Riverside County Public Defender's Office. He served as a felony trial and preliminary hearing supervisor for the P.D.'s office until his appointment to the Superior Court two years later.

Diaz also served as a judge pro tem for the Riverside County Superior Court.

Diaz was born in Dallas, Texas. His parents immigrated to Texas from Cuba and then subsequently moved to California when Diaz was eleven years old. Away from the bench, he enjoys cycling and has competed in several 50-mile rides. He is a married father of two sons.
