Biography

The Hon. Sonny S. Sandhu is a judge for the Stanislaus County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jerry Brown in 2018. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Timothy W. Salter (Ret.).


At the time of his appointment to the bench, it was thought that Judge Sandhu was the first of the Sikh faith and the first Asian-Pacific Islander to serve in Stanislaus County.


He is a registered Democrat.


Judge Sandhu graduated with his B.A. in psychology and Asian American studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He went on to earn his J.D. from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law.


Prior to his appointment to the Superior Court, Sandhu had spent his entire legal career at the Stanislaus County Public Defender's Office beginning in 2003. During his fourteen-year tenure there, Sandhu matriculated through the ranks, first working as a deputy public defender before being elevated to chief deputy and then ultimately being appointed to head the office in 2017. He was serving as the public defender for Stanislaus County when he received the call to the bench.


Judge Sandhu was born and raised in Modesto, California.
