Judge Stacia J. Buchanan: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Hon. Stacia J. Buchanan is a judge for the Fifty-Fourth District Court (A) of Michigan in Ingham County. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Rick Snyder in 2017, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Patrick Cherry (deceased).

Prior to her appointment, Buchanan handled criminal defense and family law matters in private practice since 2003. During that time, she was of counsel at Mallory, Lapka, Scott & Selin, PLLC (2013 to 2017), an attorney at the Buchanan Law Office, PLLC (2007 to 2013), and an attorney at Merchant & Maddaloni, P.C. (2003 to 2007).

She received a B.A. in psychology from Oakland University in 2000. Buchanan went on to complete a J.D. at Michigan State University College of Law in 2003.

Her memberships have included the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan and the Ingham County Bar Association (past president).

Buchanan has also served as a member of the Criminal Justice Policy Commission, the Ingham County Indigent Defense Collaborative, and the Michigan Supreme Court Criminal Jury Instruction Committee.

She was a former Director for the Lansing Education Advancement Foundation.

When not presiding over legal matters, Buchanan enjoys spending her free time as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.
