Judge Stephen B. Geary: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Stephen B. Geary is an associate justice of the Concord District Court in Massachusetts. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Charlie Baker in 2020. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Barbara S. Pearson (Ret.).


While on the bench, Geary also presided in the Ayer, Lowell, Waltham, and Woburn District Courts.


He received a B.A. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1987. Geary went on to complete a J.D. at Suffolk University Law School in 1996.


After law school, he became a partner at Geary & Geary, LLP, where he would remain until joining the judiciary in 2020. During his tenure in private practice, Geary specialized in criminal, civil, and domestic relations matters. His practice also extended to include breach of contract disputes, 209A restraining order hearings, 258E Harassment Prevention Orders, small claims litigation, summary process landlord/tenant disputes, and litigation, and land use/zoning appeals.


Geary served as a pro bono attorney for Northeast Legal Services, Lynn Neighborhood Legal Services, and Merrimack Valley Legal Services, Inc.


His memberships included the Greater Lowell Bar Association, the Middlesex Bar Association, and the Massachusetts Bar Association. From a civic standpoint, Geary served as a member and chairman of the Lowell Zoning Board of Appeals and was a coach and treasurer of the Lowell Junior High Football League.


Geary received the Lynn Neighborhood Legal Services Pro Bono Award in 2000.
