Judge Stephen S. Siegel - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Stephen S. Siegel is a judge for the Superior Court of Santa Cruz County in California. He was appointed to the bench by former governor Jerry Brown on August 7, 2012, filling a vacancy created by the conversion of a court commissioner position.

Siegel attended Ohio State University, where he earned a B.S. in social work. He then moved with his wife to New Haven, Connecticut, where she was one of the first women to attend Yale University. While living in New Haven, Siegel worked in a pizza restaurant, something he continued to do after they relocated to Santa Barbara, California. He would eventually secure a position with the County of Santa Barbara, where he worked in its food stamps eligibility program until his acceptance to Golden Gate University School of Law in 1976.

After completing his J.D. from Golden Gate University School of Law, Siegel began his legal career as a sole practitioner in his own private practice in Oakland, California. Five years later, he was hired by the Law Offices of Biggam, Christensen & Minsloff, the primary public defender firm for the County of Santa Cruz.

Then, in 2001, Siegel was appointed court commissioner for the Superior Court of Santa Cruz County. During his eleven-year tenure there, he presided over family law cases.

Siegel has served as a board member for the Santa Cruz County Domestic Violence Commission.

Siegel was born and raised in Ohio. He graduated from Shaker Heights High School.

He enjoys spending his time golfing, cooking, and taking walks.
