Judge Thomas C. Fincham - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Thomas C. Fincham is a judge for the 6th Judicial Circuit Court of Missouri. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jay Nixon on November 19, 2013, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Owens Lee Hull, Jr.

Prior to his appointment, Fincham was an associate judge for the 6th Judicial Circuit, a position to which he was named in 2010.

Fincham earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 1997. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law. As a law student, Fincham sat on the UMKC Law Review. He financed his studies by working at the Mission Hills Country Club and clerking at Wallace Saunders Austin Brown & Enochs.

He is admitted to practice in Missouri (1981) and the United States District Court for the Western District of Missouri (1981).

After graduating from law school, Fincham entered into private practice, working as an associate (1981 to 1985) and a partner (1985 to 1991) and McFadin, White & Fincham. He then transferred to Wirken & King, where he worked as a senior associate in its Litigation Department. During his tenure there, he handled personal injury (plaintiff’s), general business litigation, insurance defense, condemnation, and federal criminal matters.

Then, in 1992, Fincham opened his own private practice as a sole practitioner. He worked in that capacity until 1993, at which time he became a partner at Fincham & Sanderford (1993 to 1995) and Fincham & Salmon (1995 to 1999). Fincham supplemented his practice with service as a city attorney for the City of Dearborn (1997 to 2003) as well as a municipal judge for Oakview (1998 to 2010), Richmond (1999 to 2010), Platte Woods (2003 to 2010), and Riverside (2006 to 2010).

His memberships have included the Missouri Bar Association, the Platte County Bar Association, the Clay County Bar Association, the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association, and the Missouri Association of Trial Attorneys. He also sat on the Board of Directors of Northland Alternative Service Program, a non-profit organization dedicated to coordinating community service time for defendants who are placed on probation or diversion.

Fincham was born in Kansas City, Missouri.
