Judge Thomas J. Barbar - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Thomas J. Barbar is an associate justice for the Middlesex County Probate & Family Court in Massachusetts. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Charlie Baker on August 31, 2017.

Barbar earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Villanova University in 1986. He then completed a J.D. at New England Law in 1993. As a law student, Barbar served as a student defender in the Felony Division of the Dade County Office of the Public Defender in Miami. He also worked as a student attorney at the New England Law School Lawyering Process Clinic.

After graduating from law school, Barbar entered into private practice, specializing in family law, probate litigation, and estate planning. He started as a law clerk at Capozzoli & Drew before becoming an associate in the Law Office of Diane Capozzoli in 1994. Then, in 1997, he opened his own private practice as a sole practitioner. He worked in that capacity until 2004, at which time he became a senior associate and principal attorney at Deutsch Williams Brooks DeRensis & Holland.

His memberships have included the Massachusetts Bar Association. He sat on its Executive Management Board, its Budget & Finance Committee, and its House of Delegates. He was also a member of the Boston Bar Association, the Massachusetts GLBTQ Bar Association, and the Greater Boston Family Law Inn of Court (founding member).

Barbar was raised in Boston, where he attended Boston Latin School. He lived in Boston with his husband at the time of his appointment.
