Judge Tierra Busby - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Tierra Busby is a commissioner for the Cowlitz County Superior Court in Washington. She has worked as a commissioner for the Cowlitz County Superior Court since 2012. In 2019, the county's Superior Court judges selected Busby to serve as a part-time court commissioner to replace the Hon. Dennis Maher.

As a court commissioner, she presided over the Mental Health Court until taking over the family law and protection order dockets in 2019.

Busby received a B.A. in international studies from the University of Washington in 1995. She then completed a J.D. at the University of Oregon School of Law in 1998. After graduating from law school, Busby completed a two-year judicial clerkship and was subsequently accepted into the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program for a year-long position abroad.

Upon her return to Washington, Busby joined the Cowlitz County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office as a deputy prosecuting attorney in 2001. During her tenure there, she handled criminal, juvenile and child support matters for three years.

In 2004, Busby left the public sector to open her own private solo practice. In that capacity, she provided a portion of Cowlitz County’s juvenile defense along with serving as Guardian ad Litem in family law matters. Busby then became a partner at Frey & Busby, PLLC in 2009, and her practice there included juvenile representation, Guardian ad Litem services, wills and trusts, non-parental custody, dissolutions, child custody, paternity, adoption, and counsel for non-profit corporations.

In addition to her partnership in the firm, Busby also maintained her role as court commissioner.

Then, in 2016, she left the firm to work as an attorney at Child Focused Law, PLLC, where she continued in her practice of family law matters.
