Judge William F.B. Vodrey - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. William F.B. Vodrey is a judge for the General Division of the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas in Ohio. He was elected to the bench on November 3, 2020.

Prior to his election, Vodrey was a magistrate for the Cleveland Municipal Court, a position he held since 2001. He is a strong supporter of bail reform, training with the Arnold Foundation’s Risk Assessment Tool to deploy data-driven bail and bond decisions. An advocate for the specialized dockets of the Court of Common Pleas, including the Veterans Court, the Drug Court, and the Mental Health Court, Vodrey is an admirer of Chief Justice John Marshall, respecting his fidelity to the Constitution and his commitment to establishing a national government.

Vodrey earned a bachelor’s degree in government and history from Oberlin College in 1987. He then completed a J.D. at Case Western Reserve University School of Law in 1992.

After graduating from law school, Vodrey began his legal career as a staff attorney for the Southeastern Ohio Legal Services in New Philadelphia. He represented indigent clients who needed civil protection orders in domestic violence cases as well as individuals whose utilities had been illegally disconnected. He worked in this capacity until 1995, at which time he became an assistant prosecuting attorney for the Felony Trial Unit of the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office.

His memberships have included the Ohio Association of Magistrates, the Ohio State Bar Association, and the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association. He also sat on the Board of the American Constitution Society (Northeast Ohio Chapter) and the Cleveland Civil War Round Table (president).

He is a recipient of the Certificate of Appreciation from the Western Reserve Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (2014), the Certificate of Recognition from the Supreme Court of Ohio Lawyer to Lawyer Mentoring Program (2010), and the Certificate of Appreciation from the United States Marshals Service Fugitive Safe Surrender Program (2010).

Born and raised in East Liverpool, Ohio, Vodrey attended Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh. He moved to Cuyahoga County in 1989. He attends St. Pauls’ Episcopal Church in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. An Eagle Scout, he is on the Troop Committee of Boy Scout Troop 662 in Shaker Heights.

He is registered as a Democrat.
