Judge William H. Leary - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. William H. Leary (Ret.) served as a judge for the 2nd Judicial District Court of Minnesota. Leary was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jesse Ventura on May 20, 2002. He retired on July 7, 2018, and became a senior judge for the State of Minnesota.

Over the course of his judicial career, Leary presided over civil, criminal, family, and juvenile matters. He volunteered as the judge for the Ramsey County Mental Health Court (2005 to 2015), and he was named by the Minnesota Supreme Court to preside over all Minnesota cases for “In re Guidant Corp. Implantable Defibrillators Product Liability Litigation.”

Leary earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of St. Thomas in 1971. He spent the next several years working in juvenile corrections for the Hennepin County Home School before completing a J.D. at William Mitchell College of Law in 1979. As a law student, Leary clerked for the Hon. Sidney P. Abramson of the Ramsey County District Court.

After graduating from law school, Leary began his legal career as a law clerk to the Hon. John J. Connelly of the United States Bankruptcy Court in 1980. However, his time there was brief. Later that year, he entered into private practice, working as an attorney at Geraghty, O’Loughlin & Kenney. During his tenure there, he rose through the ranks to become a shareholder, specializing in health-care litigation, professional liability, and work-place discrimination matters.

His memberships have included the Minnesota District Judges Association. He was also involved with the HOPE International Adoption & Social Services Agency, the St. Paul-Minneapolis Archdiocese Office of Conciliation, and the Lumen Christi Catholic Community.
