Judge Brad L. Benson: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Hon. Brad L. Benson is an associate district judge for the Tillman County District Court (District 3) in Oklahoma. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Brad Henry in December 2009, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. David A. Barnett (Ret.).

During his judicial tenure, Benson has presided over civil, criminal, probate, domestic relations, and settlement conference dockets in southwest Oklahoma and sat on the Third Judicial District Drug Court since 2011. He was also a member of the e-Courts Subcommittee, assisting in the planning of a Unified Case Management System.

Prior to joining the bench, Benson spent the bulk of his legal career in private practice. He became a partner at Benson & Benson in the early 2000s and was an associate at McBee & Benson beginning in 1995. His areas of practice included representing individuals, corporate entities, and municipalities in domestic relations, criminal, probate, wills, banking, foreclosures, contracts, and title work matters.

Benson received a B.B.A. in management from the University of Oklahoma in 1988. He went on to complete a J.D. at Southern Methodist University, Dedman School of Law in 1991.

Benson was admitted to practice in Oklahoma (1992), Texas (1992), and the United States District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma (1993).

After graduating from law school, he began his legal career as an associate at Smith & Benson in Lawton, Oklahoma (1993 to 1994). Then, in 1994, Benson became a judicial assistant to the Hon. Gary Lumpkin with the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals. The following year, he moved back to his hometown of Frederick, Oklahoma, at which time he joined McBee & Benson.

He was elected to the Oklahoma Judicial Conference Executive Board in 2012, later serving as its president-elect (2015) and president (2016). Benson was also appointed by then-Governor Henry to the Selective Service Board and was appointed to the Frederick Public Schools Board of Education in 2007.

From a civic standpoint, he served as a board member and past president of the Frederick Chamber of Commerce and was also involved with the Frederick School Enrichment Foundation, the City of Frederick Airport Commission, the Frederick Jaycees (past president), the Rotary Club of Frederick, and Boy Scout Troop 220 (Executive Officer and Troop Committee Chairman).

Benson was born in Norman, Oklahoma, and attended Frederick High School (1983) in Frederick, Oklahoma. He and his wife, Kerry, have three daughters. The family attends First United Methodist Church in Frederick, where he is on the Board of Trustees. Benson, a former Eagle Scout, enjoys spending time with his children, hiking in the Witchita Mountains, history, science, and Geocaching.
